Dear Valued Supporters,
On the 19th of April 1963 the Howlin’ Mad Detachment #93 was formed in Indiana under the Marine Corps League First District. Our detachment is named after Holland McTyeire “Holwin’ Mad” Smith, a general in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He is sometimes called the father of modern U.S. amphibious warfare. His nickname, “Howlin’ Mad” Smith, was given to him by his troops in the Dominican Republic in 1916.
The Marine Corps League is the only congressionally charted Unites States Marine Corps related veterans’ organization in the United States. Its congressional charter was approved by the 75th U.S. Congress and signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937. The organization credits Major General John A. Lejeune, the 13th Marine Corps commandant, as one of its founding members. The League holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code.
The mission of the Marine Corps League is to promote the interest and to preserve traditions of the United States Marine Corps; strengthen the fraternity of Marines and their families; serve Marines, FMF Corpsmen, and FMF Chaplains who wear or who have worn the Eagle, Globe and Anchor; and foster the ideals of Americanism and patriotic volunteerism.
Your support will play a critical role in supporting Veterans and their families through scholarship programs, local food pantries and shelters, Toys for Tots, The Semper Fi Fund, The Wounded Warrior Project and other Veteran Initiatives.
In Northwest Indiana we are the Marines that march in the parades, place flags on Veteran’s graves, hold Color Guard and Honor Guard at funerals of Veterans, sometimes even act as Pall Bearers. We repair gravestones of Veterans, help families of Veterans, help Veterans get the financial military help that they need, help Veterans get ramps, etc. All of this is done voluntarily. We are a very humble and generous group of Marines that are very proud of what we stand for.
The big difference between our organization compared to a VFW or other veterans’ organization is that we are not subsidized by a corporate entity. We exist solely on donations from generous supporters such as such as yourself.
Your support is not only a difference-maker but also an investment in a brighter future for veterans and our community. We are a volunteer-based organization, and our members receive no compensation, making sure more of the funds go to where they are needed.
