Our Mission

Howlin’ Mad Detachment #93

In Northwest Indiana we are the Marines that march in the parades, place flags on Veteran’s graves, hold Color Guard and Honor Guard at funerals of Veterans, sometimes even act as Pall Bearers. We repair gravestones of Veterans, help families of Veterans, help Veterans get the financial military help that they need, help Veterans get ramps, etc. All of this is done voluntarily. We are a very humble and generous group of Marines that are very proud of what we stand for.

The Marine Corps League in general perpetuates the traditions and spirit of all Marines and Navy Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Corpsmen, who proudly wear or who have worn the eagle, globe and anchor of the Corps. Founded in 1923 by World War I hero, then Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune, it takes equal pride in its Federal Charter approved by an Act of the Seventy-Fifth Congress of the United States of America and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 4 August 1937.

The League is the only Federally Chartered Marine Corps-related veterans organization in the country. Since its earliest days, the Marine Corps League has enjoyed the support and encouragement of the active duty and reserve establishments of the United States Marine Corps. Today, the League boasts a membership of nearly 61,000 men and women, officer and enlisted, active duty and reserve Marines, honorably discharged Marine Veterans and qualified Navy FMF Corpsmen. The Marine Corps League is one of the few Veterans Organizations that experiences continual increases in its membership each year.

Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps, banding together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service that they may effectively promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and former Marines and to their widows and orphans; and to perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps and by fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular interest to Marines.

The Marine Corps has continuously stood in the forefront of our nation’s history—in both war and peace. The Marine Corps League stands at the forefront too, serving in our communities, working with our youth, and assisting our Marines and veterans. Its members realize that some of the greatest rewards of life, are those of friendship and the sense of individual and group fulfillment.

Would you like to help us in our Mission?

On top of the standard Marine Corps League values and mission statement we as a detachment try to help the community through as many volunteer and donation endeavors as we can.

Please check out some of the links below to see what we are all about:

  • Honor Guard
  • “Tun Tavern”
  • Charities we support

Without support from our local community we would not able to reach as many people as we are able. We believe that we have so much work to do and would love to have you as a partner in doing so.

There are three main ways to help us help the community:

  • The first is through donations. We are a certified 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and accept donations online via a service called givebutter.com. Utilizing this service we are able to take one time or recurring donations. You can securely donate right here using all different forms of payment:
  • The second is to support our Tavern that we opened in the summer of 2021. We refer to it as the “Tun Tavern” and are very proud of our facility. If you’ve ever been to a VFW it’s kind of like that, smoke free, and you DO NOT have to be a marine to come hang out.
  • The third is to become a member, we are one of the largest detachments in the state of Indiana and would like to keep that title alive. But more that just becoming a member please become a part of our community!
