🇺🇸 February 23, 1945 🇺🇸
On this day in 1945, United States Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima — one of the most pivotal and hard-fought battles of World War II.
The flag raising was carried out by Marines from Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division. The moment — captured in the famous photograph by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal — became an enduring symbol of determination, unity, and the fighting spirit of the Marine Corps.
The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted 36 brutal days. Nearly 7,000 Marines lost their lives, and more than 19,000 were wounded. Of the six Marines in the iconic photo, three were killed in action before the battle ended. Their courage — and the sacrifice of all who fought there — helped secure a critical strategic airfield and marked a major turning point in the Pacific campaign.
The image later inspired the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, ensuring that their legacy would live on for generations.
Today, we remember the grit, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of the Marines who fought on Iwo Jima.
At Tun Tavern, we honor our Corps, our history, and the heroes who carried the colors to the top of Suribachi.
